RARE SONG DYNASTY JIZHOU WARE CERAMIC TEA BOWL China, Jizhou kilns Song Dynasty, c. 1200-1300 Glazed stoneware with resist decoration Exquisite early Chinese tea bowl. Beautiful patina. This bowl is exceptionally fine . A museum quality example of the sublime nature found in Song Dynasty ceramic ware. In China, powdered tea replaced leaf tea after 900. The previous leaf tea looked elegant in green bowls, but the green powdered tea looked more appealing against a dark glaze. Potters manipulated the firing and cooling processes to create dramatic glaze effects. Here, paper cut-outs of phoenixes were applied to the first, darker layer of glaze. They burned off in the firing, leaving their outlines. The decorative scheme seen on this bowl is called feng-mei-wen (phoenix-and-plum design). Despite their humble origins, the bowls were admired by Chinese emperors and Buddhist monks alike, and were influential in the development of tea culture in China and Japan. Measures approximately 4 3/4" across and 1 1/2" high. In excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks. A superb bowl for the tea aficionado or collector of rare Chinese antiques.
