For sale is a lot of 19th century Tong Weapons and a book written in 1962 detailing the Tong Fighters aka Hatchet Men. 2 Large Butterfly swords with D-guard handle. 3 Tong Fighting Knives. 1 Book "The Hatchet Men" written and signed in 1962 by Richard H. Dillon Many pieces of this set came from a Kung Fu practitioner from old San Francisco Chinatown. These varieties of knives were used by Tong/Triad enforcers in Chinatowns and southern China over the last few hundred years. Isolated and needing to combine resources, benevolent associations family and trade associations emerged to support their members. In time, many of these associations needed to protect their interests, whether legal or nefarious interests, such as gambling houses etc. Enforcers known as Red Poles, or Highbinders were assigned to manage local threats and disputes. This lot of weapons would have been part of an enforcers arsenal. Skills of the Enforcers and the skills of traditional Chinese Kung Fu intersect, Enforcers had to be proficient in Kung Fu to survive. Tongs and associations would hire private tutors of Kung Fu to ensure their group were strong. A very rare combination of Tong Knives, hard to find so many in one set, especially with an excellent vintage book revealing their historical period and use.The last two old illustrations featuring Tong weapons read more
