Chinese Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368 AD)Brown Wide Mouth Double Handled Storage Jar This is a classic Yuan Dynasty period wide mouth storage jar with two double handles in a chocolate brown glaze. The shape and glaze is classic Yuan with a more rounded body with angular shoulder, tall neck, shallow wide foot rim and wider V-shaped handles. The glaze is thinner and not thick and dripping like that found on classic Song Dynasty pieces. The glaze color is also lighter brown and not dark or near black like the glaze on Song Dynasty pieces. This piece has seen long term use and then burial. The foot ring has worn smooth and under 40X magnification the surface is covered in a maze of tiny use scratches. The glaze has worn along the rim edge and handles. The piece shows its long term burial well. Under magnification there are manganese and other crystals over the whole surface and concentrated in the crevices and glaze pits. The unglazed base and foot sides are encrusted with deposits from long term burial. This jar is in incredible condition for a nearly 800 year old Yuan Dynasty jar. No chips, crack or hairlines. Yuan pieces are more to difficult to find. The form is classic and artfully crafted.
