Up for auction is a beautifully crafted basket made by Chitimacha Indian, Scarlett Darden. This basket features a design called, "Bull Eye", woven in the base of this square tray. This basket was purchased from the Chitimachas in Louisiana in 1996 by a collector of river cane baskets. There is a tag that was kept with the basket which reads, "Scarlet Darden, Chitimacha Crafts".The basket measures 8" square at the top and is 2" deep. The Bull Eye design is repeated four times in the base, one for each side and has a twill pattern between them, that originates from the center of the basket. The rivercane splits have been dyed red and black and were split again after dyeing , as the Chitimacha do. (The bottom of the basket shows the natural color of the split again spokes.) The sides of the tray are woven with alternating rows of red and black river cane strips that are dyed and split again. The split side of the cane is on the outside (bottom) of the base and the inside on the sides of the tray. A traditional folded rim is lashed with red weavers.I do not see any damage at all on this rare and spectacular basket!!Free insured shipping and extra careful packing is included for this beautiful basket!Below is a small article about Scarlett and her husband John Darden:In South Louisiana, near Charenton, on a twenty-three acre reservation, read more
