Matty! New York Giants 1909-1911 E90-1 American Caramel The offered card is a 1909-11 E90-1 American Caramel issue of New York Giants Hall of Fame pitcher, all-time great Christy Mathewson. This significantly scarce baseball set of 120 cards (although the card back reads "Base Ball Series, 100 Subjects") was issued with sticks of caramel candy and are much more difficult to find than their tobacco card counterparts from the same era. Matthewson (an uncorrected spelling error), Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb, and Cy Young are the keys to the set. This particular card has near-perfect centering, beautiful bright colors, and four rather strong, somewhat square corners, and features Matty in the pitching wind-up position. At first glance, the front appears to be in EX+ condition. Close inspection, however, reveals two surface creases and some rather insignificant caramel stains common to the issue, along with some minor natural age wear. The apparent reason for the card's great shape is that it was glued into a scrapbook in the era, as was common practice at the time. As such, the card's back has some minor paper loss as can be seen in the photograph. This, however, does not impact the aesthetic beauty of the card's front, which has been remarkably preserved over time. We are offering this terrific card with no reserve. For condition, please refer to the card photos, which can be enlarged, however, I'd be happy to try and answer any questions you may have.
