Counter Display Model for General Chain ~ circa 1880

General Chain was founded in 1872 as the
Cincinnati Pump Manufacturing Company.
The original product line consisted of two styles of well-cistern pumps.
One style pump was a "bucket pump" and the other style was a "chain pump".

This style of cistern, was common in many towns. From 1850s - 1910.
This little antique model of a Cistern,
would have been a wonderful display, on the sales counter.
It is actually a pencil sharpener and works great!
The wooden housing was designed like the large outdoor cisterns.
The crank on the side, would have pulled the buckets of water
to the top and poured out of the front spout.
On this small model, the crank turns the sharpener.
You can see the hole, on the opposite side, w the pencil is inserted.
The housing is attached to the cast iron base, as were the actual sized ones.
The base is hinged and held closed, with a small metal pin lock.
When the actual cisterns needed worked on,
they were unlocked and opened, to get to the pump, chain and buckets.
The base is marked on three top sides,
Cin'ti Pump Co.**** Cin'ti. O. **** Pat Appld For.

This unique antique Cistern Model, may possibly be a one of a kind.

Wonderful solid, working condition.
Looks to have been repainted, but quite some time ago.
The original red paint has begin to show through,
which I think gives it great character.
The base is 8 ½" by 10 ½". The cistern house is 2"x 6" x 10 ½" tall.
