This is a circa 1850 Diamond Maze Quilt from Maryland. This quilt is hand made and hand pieced. The quilt consists of only nine 23 inch square blocks and three 2 inch wide borders that surround the blocks. Each block consists of too many diamonds, rectangles, and other pieces to count. What makes this quilt so amazing is that when you look at from different angles you see different geometric patterns. The quilt has a complex interlocking design. Each block has scalloped ginger bread quilting on the small muslin pieces, feathered quilting on the large muslin pieces, and checked quilting on colored fabric pieces. The three borders are two strips of colored fabric separated by a strip of muslin. The inner fabric border has diagonal quilting. The white muslin border has cable/chain quilting that continues around the corners. The outer fabric border has zig zag quilting. All of the borders are perfectly mitred which is extremely rare for quilts of that period. Every small little piece of fabric meets in precision on this quilt. A quilt of this complexity is not an easy design to execute and had to have made by an advanced quilter and the artist was very proficient with quilting. The artist had a real sense of design and style, especially for the time. The tiny rolled binding on the edge of the quilt is very neatly done with invisible stitching. This quilt is in mint condition and is immaculate. There are no stains on the front of the quilt and the color of the fabrics are vibrant. This quilt is 160 years old! On the back of the quilt there are a few minor stains that do not show through to the front what so ever and there is slight oxidation on fold lines. This quilt was well taken care of and respected. We carry quilts at east-coast-quilts that have not been abused. The quilt has been hand laundered and is ready to be displayed. The quilt is 82 inches wide by 82 inches long. This is a very rare quilt to be available for purchase.
