This is an exquisite piece of antique hand carved ivory, circa 1850. It is an old smoking utensil. It measures 22 1/2 inches from end to end. It is made from Asian elephant ivory. The ivory is hand carved, and each section has its' own carving. Most are of a woman. The piece does show its age in certain spots. T is an ivory knob on the top that has a crack in in, which can be seen in pic 2, I believe. It is still sturdy, even with the crack. It could use a good cleaning, as it has some resin stains, but I know nothing about cleaning ivory, and wouldn't want it to lose its' patina. I procured this item at an estate sale, in a very affluent part of New York. I had it looked at by several antique experts, for the general consensus of its' worth. The average was approx. $1,250.00. I also did some of my own research, in books and on the internet, and the value was basically the same as what was told to me. This item is legal, as it is pre-ban and is regarded as a piece of art and an antique. It would make a lovely addition to a collection of Asian art, or tobbaciana.
