The Feathered Star pattern has been around since about the second quarter of the 19th century. I have read that it is not an easy pattern to make. This 1870's or 80's quilt presents a nice interpretation of the Feathered Star, with five small stars inside each feathered star. It is hand stitched in classic red and white solids with lots of quilting in grids and with double rows of diagonal quilting around the perimeter. It is quilted with 7 to 9 stitches per inch, counted on one side. The smallest triangles have approximately 3/4" by 1" sides. The binding is also hand stitched and in great condition. This quilt is 72 inches square; the batting is very thin. This is in excellent condition with just a few small stains, mostly near the edges, as shown in the pictures. A couple somewhat larger light stains are on the back, also shown. If one desired I'm sure the material would be able to take a cold soaking. I found no holes or tears, just a missing stitch or two. Any variation of color is due to light coming from the windows behind and beside the quilt. This would be a wonderful wall hanger due to its size and light weight and it would be just great in a primitive, cottage, or casual setting. Guaranteed as written.
