The date of the Hillerich & Bradsby 125 is Circa 1919 (as is evidenced by the very faint side writing on the barrel), making this the earliest known authentic Ruth bat ever to come to the auction block, used during his playing days with the Boston Red Sox. As it is known, The Babe started out as a pitcher in the Minors, and pitched for the Sox, establishing himself as the best hitting pitcher in history. A splendid all-around athlete, he also established an incredible lifetime ERA of 2.28 and a World Series record of 29 consecutive scoreless innings, a standing record for 42 years. Although it wasn't until he reached New York that he hit 54, 59, and eventually 60 home runs in 1927, Babe Ruth posted an outstanding .307 batting average as a pitcher in Boston.
