This black and white studio-issued photograph is 10 3/8 inches by 13 inches including a 5/8" white border and would be beautiful professionally framed. It is inscribed to "Lilly Belle Mandeville Sincerely good wishes Joan Crawford." Lilly Belle received this along with additional photos as the winner of a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer {MGM} contest when she was 12 years old and it has been passed down in the family to current owner. Photo credit on the back is to Clarence Sinclair Bull with MGM and is identified as Joan Crawford, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Clarence Sinclair Bull (American, 1895–1979) was a photographer best known for his portraits of Hollywood celebrities, such as Greta Garbo and Elizabeth Taylor. Born in Sun River, MT, Bull studied with Western painter Charles Marion Russell (American, 1864–1926) before moving to Hollywood in 1918. He worked as an assistant cameraman at Metro Pictures, where he shot stills of actors during production breaks. After Metro Pictures merged with Goldwyn, he became head of the stills department at the new MGM in 1924. Bull was an expert in the technical aspects of photography, including lighting, retouching, and printing.
