Very Rare edition of St. Augustine's greatest work. Treasure! " A cornerstone of Christian Thought" "The City of GOD" (Latin: De Civitate Dei, also known as De Civitate Dei contra Paganos: The City of God against the Pagans) by St Augustine, Bishop of Hippo in the 5th Century. The books are written in Latin, dealing with issues concerning God, martyrdom, Jews, and other Christian philosophies. De Civitate Dei libri XXII, Lugduni, apud Sebastianum Honoratum. 2 volumes, 8vo. These 2 greatly preserved vellum and gilt volumes comprising 22 books, Complete and self-contained. vol i.- Lib I-XII. vol ii. - Lib XIII-XXII. Edited by JS Vives. These are two original antiquarian volumes, 447 years old. The set is formally part of the collected works, but often found separately. Printer's device on title page, some usual browning and staining, some marginal damp-staining. Overall, the set is in VERY GOOD and ATTRACTIVE condition. " Augustine wrote the treatise to explain Christianity's relationship with competing religion and philosophies, and to the Roman government with which it was increasingly intertwined...Despite Christianity's designation as the official religion of the empire, Augustine declared its message to be spiritual rather than political. Christianity, he argued, should be concerned with the mystical, heavenly city of Jerusalem (the New Jerusalem) rather than the earthly politics. His theology supported and even helped to define the separation of Church and State that characterized Western European politics through the Middle Ages and beyond (unlike the Byzantine East where earthly politices and spiritual affairs were one and the same institution."
