I have for sale a very nice 1850M Staff & Field Sword. This sword was part of my Grandfather's estate as he was a very avid collector of all kinds of Civil War memorabilia as well as other things. I don't know everything about antiques, but I will describe the sword to the best of my ability. The sword itself seems to be in very nice condition. No rust at all. Everything is straight. The blade etching details are very visible on both sides of the sword. The "bucket" is slightly loose and moves about a milimeter. The sharkskin handle grip is intact with no tears and a few worn spots and the wire wrap is unbroken. The only 2 markings besides the blade etching is the word "J RON : PROOF" and what I believe is "W & C" on the very bottom of the blade. The metal scabbard shows black stains on it and is dented on the bottom tip protector. Looking at other scabbard pictures online it looks as if the tip has worn down from dragging or something. It is staight however and the sword fits securely into it and retracts smoothly. If you need more pictures or have any questions at all, please ask and I will do my best to answer them. Also, rest assured that this sword is authentic and fairly priced because satisfaction is my ultimate goal so bid with confidence. The scabbard is an overall chocolate brown color and the "stains" are darker brown not black as previously indicated. Also, after researching this a little more I believe it was "made" by Horstmann and imported from Germany, although I'm not sure. I only say this because of the "IRON PROOF" marking. I can honestly say that the blade etching is quite beautiful and intricate from top to bottom, compared to a few swords I've seen on the web going for a lot more money. I will soon be selling a 1840 Artillery Saber and a 1860 Calvary Sword with scabbards. Both in excellent condition so keep an eye out. A very nice collector informed me that this is a high end Foot Officers sword, going on the fact that it has 2 "branches" in the wrist guard instead of three. The mix up was because this also has the "US" in the wrist guard, something most Foot Officer's swords don't have (and also, my Grandfather had it labelled as such) I looked everyw and couldn't find a description or picture of Foot Officer's sword like this, but I have no reason to doubt the collector who informed me because he is obviously very knowledgeable. Thanks again Darrell. FURTHER AMENDMENT TO LAST REVISE: Another collector informed me that he believes this sword to be a non-regulation Staff and Field Sword with a blade made by Wester & Co from Prussia.(Germany) This is really all that can be discerned by the marks on the sword. I uploaded more pictures of these markings. Thanks for the information Dane.
