ANOTHER GRAPHIC BATTLE LETTER, The Overland Campaign 1864, written by 7th RI Officer serving with the 19th NY and 11 Mass Battery. It is so graphic, it's sad, it's the Battle letter of letters... I thought the other I had listed was good..... This is the best.... " the siege of Richmond had commenced.........Our battery fired all day blowing up 3 of their cassions full of shot and shell and dismantling two guns....One of their Artillery Officers was blown to pieces..........Talks about field hospital getting hit with 20 pdr......In the morning I was going to the battery and just as I got to within 3 feet of a little drummer boy a solid shot came over our breastworks striking a man in the head and then hit the boy tearing his arm to pieces and completely ripping open his bowels, He gave two or three awful shrieks and died.... WOW what a letter, you have to read it all, should be published............THE BEST....so much more.
