Featured in this auction isan Original and .44 cal. Civil War Combustible Skin Cartridge. c. 1861-65. These cartridges were Patented May 21st 1861 and manufactured by R. Bartholow. D.C. Sage made a similar cartridge in 1862 using a slightly different method and material to make the cartridge. Ebay, this cartridge is inert and is no longer combustible, please do not remove. I have displayed the cartridge with a dropped .44 caliber bullet, which is included in the auction. The Bartholow patent was for the encasement of powder in a treated tube dipped in collodion and affixed to the cast lead bullet. The big selling point to the US Army was WATER PROOF. Percussion revolvers that fired Combustible Cartridges were susceptible to damp weather and often miss-fired. XXXXXX This cartridge is shown in Dean S. Thomas's book, Ready Aim Fire Small Arms Ammunition in the Battle of Gettysburg. These are Rare and hard to find in any condition. I purchased this one from Keith Shepard prior to his passing away a few years ago. I Guarantee this itemto be completely authentic with a money back Guarantee if you are not satisfied. Good luck with my auction. If you have any questions please e-mail. Buyer Pays $ 8.50 for S&H and Insurance. Take a moment and look at my other auctions. You just might see something you've got to have. Thanks for stopping by.
