This marking slate measures approximately 7 ¾” X 9 ¾” in it’s dovetailed pine frame and demonstrates all the telltale evidence of period construction to include the distinctive striations of a steam driven saw across the face of the natural slate. The little slate is deeply inscribed for hospital steward use with a heading for a column of Bed No.’s the Ward No. and STEW. identification. The heading identifies the hospital as BROADWAY LANDING which was an Army Field Hospital near Petersburg, Virginia. (see: Surgeons of the 4th Div. 9th Army Corps / Ken Burns’ –THE CIVIL WAR ) We were fortunate enough to acquire four similarly marked slates some years ago from a New England estate and have slowly offered them out to collectors. A wonderful item for the Civil War medical enthusiast. please note: ALL ITEMS ARE CURRENT & AVAILABLE UNLESS MARKED SOLD!!
