Visit My eBay Store: El Rancho Antiques and Cutlery This Civil War relic was part of the extensive Skelly Oil Estate Cane collection which I've had the good fortune to see and acquire a small part of. The piece was carved from a Pine tree left partially standing after the Battle of Seven Pines. A soldier, now battlefield tour guide who had fought and lived through the battle used a branch of the tree (including a smaller branch attached to it which he wove around the larger piece and tacked down with a couple of small period nails) to make this cane. He wrote all this and some haunting facts about the battle and the futility of battle by inference, in ink on the lower part of the cane w he cleared some bark away. After the war he must have become or wanted to become a tour guide at the battlefield. 's what I have been able to read and understand so far:" Cut in?? the center of 7 Pines Battlefield w 15,000 soldiers were killed May 31st, 1862 Battle fought by George McClellan and Battlefield Guide J.E. Lyne." HINT : The reserve on this cane is a over $200. Sign up for my email newsletters by
