Family of Jno. Woolson, USSN ass't. paymaster of the USS Housatonic
1st Warship sunk by a Sub! Asfar as I could find out, the USS Housatonic was built in 1862 at theBoston Navy Yard. The Housatonic then went to Charleston, SC to join the USN blockage at the Confederate Seaport. It was attacked February 1864 by submarine (Hunley?). Civil War Three Family Albums Chock full of CdV/Cabinet Photos/1 Ferrotype! 14 Members in Uniform or at Camp I have 3 Albums with 14 cabinet photos/CdV's of men in military uniform from the Civil War. T is one large Album/leather and 2 smaller ones; one leather and one velvet. This lot is not to be separated. In total t are 141 photos. Some of the photo identifications and family names as best as I can read them are: Small velvet album: Jno. F. Woolson U.S.N. Emma Packard Jno. F. Woolson Asst. Paymaster U.S.N. Small Leather Album: Albert Mosley 2nd Michigan Infantry 1862 Angie Patrick Frieda(?) Greene Miss CHarlotte Hill Mr. Cas(?t)le Will Cortle (?) Mrs. Frankie Bodcock Maple Grove Mich. 1865 Large Album: Lt. Joesph Kerin, adj't 6th Gary USSS (?) 7th Regiment (tent photo) 1st Lt. D.P. Richardson Rejtlgmm (?) 6th NYC Capt. W.A. Sheldon Capt. Mrs. Sheldon Fentris (?) Major John Carevandin 6th NY (?) UC (A. "P.B.") Photos taken in these locations: Large Album all taken in NY and PA. Small leather album, NY, Michigan, PA and Mass., mainly Michigan. Small Velvet album, mainly NY, one each in Brattleboro Vermont, Iowa and Mass. Small photos are mainly 2 1/2" X 4", some 2 1/2" X 4 1/2". 3 Cent Inter revenue stamp green on back of"Yours truely Fentuss" head & shoulder shot/military. Large Album photos 18 at 4"X61/2", 30 at 2 1/2"X4" and the requisite of Lincoln/J. Hall Photographer. Small leather album starts off with one ferrotype of a young male, colored checks, 'Golder and Robinson', Broadway, N.Y. and ends with a colorized print of 'Past, Present and Future', three women by John P. Soule, 1864. This album is mainly family with the one photo of Albert Mosley, 1862 2nd infantry Michigan. Small velvet album holds the Grant photo with a 2 cent red stamp on back. (front image ) & CdV, by Troxell & BBother, others. Total of 9/ 2 Cent Inter. Revenue Telegraph/Bank Check/Proprietary; Geo. Washington Stamps and one/ 3 cent as noted above. Stamps are on the backs of 10 photos. I have a listing of photos w/general info and photographer available if needed. Please note: I put in Lee's name as opposed to Grant....I am sorry.
