THIS UNUSAL CANTEEN IS OUT OF A EARLY MILITARY COLLECTION COMPILED NEAR FREDERICKSBURG VIRGINIA FOR 5 DECADES, THIS CANTTEN HAS THE CONFEDERATE TYPE DRUM BODY BUT IS NOT THE LIGHTWEIGHT TIN YOU USUALLY SEE, THIS ONE IS HEAVY, AND HAS A CRUDE LIP THAT I BELIEVE HAD RUBBER ON IT AT ONE TIME. IT HAS LOTS OF DINGS AND DENTS THAT YOU WOULD EXPECT TO SEE AND LOTS OF PATINA ON IT. ETCHED INTO ONE SIDE IS "W BLANTON CO A 1ST REGT S.C. VOLS." THIS ETCHING IS DONE IN THE CORRECT PERIOD STYLE AND HAS LOTS OF GRIME AND CORROSION ON THE LETTERS, THIS IS GENUINE AND AGE LIKE THIS CANT BE FAKED. I FOUND HIM ON THE ROLLS; THE UNIT HAS A COLORFUL HISTOY, HE WAS IN :1st Regiment, South Carolina Infantry (McCreary's) (1st Provisional Army) 1st Infantry Regiment, Provisional Army completed its organization at Richmond, Virginia, in August, 1861. Most of the officers and men had served in the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, a six-month command, which was mustered out of service in late July. The men were from Charleston and Columbia, and the counties of Darlington, Marrion, Horry, Aiken, and Florence. Assigned to General Gregg's and McGowan's Brigade, the unit fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor.
