Here is a Genuine Civil War " Confederate CAPTURED " Canteen that started its life out as a RARE Jacob Voegtle Canteen and you can tell this is one of his canteens by the One of a Kind , "Small" Slanted Tin Collars which from our understanding, NO other maker used these small collars when making their canteens. Now, if you have the Civil War Canteen book called, " U.S. Army & Militia Canteens 1775-1910 " by Mike O'Donnell then you can read a GREAT deal more on this maker as well as see ALL the pics shown above. We took SEVERAL pics from his book to show you WHY, We & "OTHER" Licensed Historians know this is a Confederate Captured Canteen and you'll read A LOT more on this below. Now, if you do NOT have this book and you happen to win this canteen and would like copy's of these pics to add to your collection, or to just keep with your newly won canteen, then feel free to email us as were ALWAYS HAPPY to copy them for you at NO extra cost. First off, this canteen is ONE OF A KIND and by FAR one of the rarest we'll EVER have to offer. Were actually listing our other VERY RARE canteen this week which is a Confederate Tin Canteen, so be sure to check that one out as well. It will be listed on Weds, encase anyone looks and they don't see it listed yet. Now, PLEASE compare this Reference pics above to this canteen we have listed here so you can see ALL the Special Quality's this canteen has and also so you can see how this started off as a RARE, 1858 Union Canteen, then it was Captured by the Confederates and covered with their VERY RARE, Black, Knapsack style, "OIL" cloth that ONLY the Confederates had from our understanding. I have YET to see a Union Accoutrement with this same type cloth and this is the reason I state it that way, Plus we had 2 Licensed Civil War Dealers here in Fredericksburg Va tell us it was Confederate Captured and the Oil Cloth Covering proved this because they were the Only ones that used such material. You can Also see an Example of this EXACT Cloth Covering in O'Donnells book and we have placed that pic above as pic number 4. You can see how O'Donnell informs you THAT canteen was Captured as well and had the " Oil Covering " applied to it as this canteen did. Notice how that canteen is Practically Identical to this one here. The Only difference we came up with is the small tin collar applied to this canteen we have here as we can't see the size of the one in O'Donnell's book. Now, this is NOT Leather and we placed a picture above of a Leather Covered Canteen so you can see the Difference between them. The LEATHER covered canteen is MUCH Smoother and leather as you ALL know is VERY Distinct in its construction. There's NO Way to get these two materials confused and we just want to make sure Everyone knows this. If you look at the pics of this Canteen, especially the Close Ups showing one of the Attachment loops, you'll see the burlap style cloth which is "Under" this black topping. When I say "Under" please understand, this is NOT two separate pieces of material, but is ONE solid piece. However, the "Oil" cloth CONSISTED of this burlap style material and this is why were pointing it out to you so you can see this PROVES its NOT "Leather." It's VERY Important you recognize this, otherwise you will not understand the difference between the Union and Confederate Canteens of this style. We also Guarantee for LIFE this Canteens Authenticity as well as the covering NOT being made of Leather. Now, this canteen does come with a "Portion" of the leather strap and you can see this above. The strap is in Great condition for its age and we believe it to be part of the original strap, but with it not being attached to the canteen, I"m sure anythings possible. This Canteen was Found by myself about ten years ago while out running the Back Roads here in Virginia as I'm a Picker and it came from a town called, "Little Washington Virginia" and its located just outside Sperryville and very close to Chester Gap which takes you to Front Royal Virginia. So, TONS of Confederate History throughout this ...
