For sale is a Civil War CSA era pocket bible owned by Thomas A. Robinson of Company G of the 3rd Regiment, North Carolina Cavalry. I've started researching this, but t's a long way to go. T's a lot of fascinating information about Robinson on the front and back flaps of the bible, including the phrase "captured May 17, 1863." So, I've taken some good photos and I'll describe things as best I can and I'll let you decide. I like to think that Robinson carried the bible into battle and while in prison. See what you think. Just as a start, Thomas A. Robinson does appear in the National Park Service's "Civil War Soldiers and Sailors" database. His name matches the information in the Bible. You can check it out at: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm According to the records, he entered and left service as a Private. So, 's what we have: Bible Info - It's the 1861 edition of the Holy Bible (containing the Old and New Testaments) published by Oxford, London. It's 5 3/8 inches by 3.5 inches. It's 1 3/8 inches thick.. T's a LOT of notes and writing, mainly on the front and back inside cover and pages. Some of it looks original from use and some looks like it was added later (by a child... perhaps of Robinson's... or at least someone with less sophisticated handwriting). On the front page in old script and ink, it says: T. A. Robinson Comp (G) 3d NC.C. Kinston NC So, that seems to indicate Company G, 3rd Regiment, North Carolina Calvary. Regretfully, I couldn't find much about that group. Under that in light pencil it says Nov 4, 1863 . Other dates and dated notes in the Bible include: Captured on May 17, 1863 (on the inside back cover... that's t twice) Psalms 23d Chapt 16th of August 1864 (inside back cover) Proverbs 20th Chapter Nov 20th 1871 So you can follow the photos, 's the rest of the writing in the Bible: Inside front cover: T. A. Robinson Laurens Bladen Co NC Under that a drawn Mason's insignia. Daniel 3d Chapt. On the facing page: As described above, it has the inked name and CSA information in old ink and script and the date Nov 4th 1863. Also, written sideways near the top of the page it says Bladen Co., NC . On the next page (facing the publisher's info) it says: T. A Robinson Elizabethtown Bladen Co. NC Within the bible t are some pencil marks by passages and two folded down pages (in Proverbs and Matthew). On the last page of the bible text, it's handwritten Psalm XC . On the page facing that at the back of the bible, it says: T. A. Robinson Laurens Hill Bladen, Co NC Feb 19th 1871 Above that it says: 12 Chapt Judges On the back inside cover it says: Leviticus XVII - ? (I can't make it out) Under that : T. A. Robinson Bladen Co NC Bladen co Prov Chapt XIII (that's the page folded down in the bible) On the back inside cover, it says: Captured May 17 186? Proverbs 20th Chapter Nov 20th 1871 Micah Chapt 7 Psalms 23rd Chapt (That a Confederate soldier would be reading the 23rd Psalm... maybe in prison... is pretty amazing. 16th of August 1864 Captured May 17 1863 T. A. Robinson Elizabethtown Bladen Co. And in the bible was a yellow piece of lined paper used as a bookmark that says: T. A. Robinson Second Book of Kings Along with a long listing of Chapters and the text: March 14, 1875 Feb 25 1875 Condition wise the only real problem is that the back cover is loose. It had three hinges that have come loose. The front cover has three of the same type hinges and while the edge is loose, it's still tightly attached. I think the cover is leather over cardboard and t's chipping along the edges of the front cover and the spin (take a look at the photos). The writing is all clear and the pages tight and in generally good shape. I had to play with the color in the photos a bit to get the ink and pencil to show (it's easier to read than in the photos). So, what do you think? I'd like to imagine the bible...
