Hello and welcome to my auction. Up for bids is a 100% guaranteed authentic Civil War period Confederate "D" guard bowie knife. It measures in at 18" total length and the blade itself is 13 1/4" long. Confederate D guards knives are of simple, full tang construction and many were turned out by blacksmiths for the local Southern patriots to carry off to war to fight the Yankee aggressors. It has the very end of the tang correctly peened to the guard as you can see below. This particular knife has an unusual double ferrule feature...1 at each end of the handle. in the 2nd photo down, you can see where the blacksmith soldered the ferrules. The wood grip is pecan...a plentiful hardwood here in the South. There are a couple of negatives about this knife that I'm mentioning for the sake of accuracy. The guard is loose and there are a couple of reasons for this in my opinion. Number one, the ferrule at the end of the handle has no cap on it and the guard and tang are peened directly on top of the wood. Number two, the slot on the other end of the D guard where the blade passes through it and into the wood was cut too long and it's a little woobly because of that "craftsmanship". That being said, those things do not affect the displayability of this knife...it would look great hanging up on the wall of the old relic room. I e-mailed pictures of this knife to noted author and Confederate Bowie knife expert Lee Hadaway and he said although he didn't think it would win any beauty contests, the knife was authentic to the Civil War period and was good. As is evidenced in the photo above, the blade has been sharpened down over the years. This knife was most likely taken home after the war and used around the homestead. There is a nice even patina all over the knife and it exhibits all of the tell-tale signs that one looks for on a 149 year old fighting knife. This is a solid representative example of a locally manufactured blacksmith made knife that "Johnny Reb" carried off to defend his state's rights and the honor of his homeland. Please , I'm a member in good standing of the CWDCA (Civil War Dealers and Collectors Association) and as such offer a 100% guarantee regarding authenticity. Thanks for looking and please don't hesitate to e-mail me if you have any questions. I try my best to answer all inquires within 24 hours. This artifact is a piece of our great American history and as such, I want it to stay here. I will not ship it out of the United States of America. REMEMBER...
