This is a Confederate sack coat. I chose this style of coat for eBay because it was used in every theater of the war and was seen from the start to the end in some quanity or another. Even in units that were for a time well supplied by arsenals or by thier home states, the sack coat persisted in making an appearance in the ranks. Some states like North Carolina had its own distinct style of sack coat, but the basic sack coat came in many forms and from any number of producers. This one is of the common style. It is a simple three piece body with two piece sleeves, and a seven button front. In general cut and fit, it is a close copy of the Union fatigue coat or sack coat. The color is a nice gray, made up of undyed whitish cotton threads and gray wool threads. This jean cloth is of a slightly nicer and finer weave then the tannish gray jean used in most Confederate arsenal jackets, but is heavier and coarser then modern wool fabrics. Great care has been taken to keep the appearance of this coat as authentic as possible. All visible stitching, inside and out is hand worked. The buttonholes too are hand worked. This jacket is unlined, so all the seams are hand flat felled. The hand work is all done with a brownish thread, common on Confederate clothing. T is also some hand worked top-stitching as well. The buttons are cast pewter block
