CIVIL WAR SOLDIER'S LETTER HOME Written to his cousin Libby, John L. Danford details other soldiers neglect of duty and their punishments. The four page letter written in pencil reads as follows: Now Libby yesterday I wrote you nearly a sheet today I happen to be out on picket and moving my writting traps with me... Still I don't know that you or anyone else can read this, as I never could write with a pencil. I wrote to Ann two or three notes, for fear she does not get her letters I will mention them atmanda... some must send stamps, you must see to things again have the money to buy them with. Frank sent me 8 this got lost... Men have been tried before a court martial for neglect of duty and been sentenced as follows. Private Wm Kimble of Co. H for sleeping on his post Oct 11 1863. Sentence to carry a block of wood four times each day, for thirty days. Private ringease, Co F for the same crime sentenced to the same. Private McGee Co. H the same offense sentenced to the same. Private Wm Wilson, Co F for going home on a furlough last March and failing to report his return sentenced the same as the others. These four have got their pardons all (?) to this camp.
