Not sure of the name of the writer of this diary, but I think it is E.A. French(see 4th photo) of the Co. B 11th Pa. Cavalry Camp, near Culpeper. Jan 1, 1864.
Very interesting Civil War cavalryman's diary. Covers Jan 1, 1864 to Dec. 31, 1864. 146 pages all written on, no blank pages. All memoranda pages are written on also. These contain his list of battles and letters written and letters received with names and dates. All pages are in ink except one. This is a very interesting diary with over 3/4 of its 146 pages covering fighting including events leading up to and after the Battle of Toms Brook. (Also called the Woodstock Races). Much is written about this cavalry to cavalry battle in books. Google it, very interesting Civil War history. His writing starts out very neat and gets more hurried through the diary. No doubt from all the fighting. This is the list of battles in back of diary as best I can read them: 1. Battle of Fredricksburg and Chancellarville 2. Battle of Beverly Ford 3. Can't make it out, see photo 4. Battle of Gettsyburg 5. Battle of Williamsport 6. Battle of Boons Burough 7. Can't read, see photo 8. Battle of Brandy Station 9. Battle of Culpeper 10. Battle of Stevensburg 11. Battle of Brandly Station 12. Battle of 4 miles Southwest of Chancerville-May 6-1864 13. Battle neart Stotsyn----? See photo. May 8, 1864 14. Battle of Ashland Station, May 11, 1864 15. Battle of Meadow Brg, May 12, 1846 Toms Brook, Oct 9, 1864. This diary covers battles numbered 12 through 15 and Toms Brook, Oct 9, 1864 where Custer is mentioned and a battle flag taken along with cannons and rebs captured, station burned and so on. From about May 6, 1864 on to the Oct. 9 Battle of Toms Brook and through to the end of the diary he was involved in fighting. Names of towns, churches, hills, roads, people killed, rebs captured and wounded, tracks torn up,bridges burned etc. Just way to much to try and list. Custer is mentioned 2 times. Diary is in very good condition. I purchased this diary from an estate with 2 other Civil War items that I have also listed and is fresh to the market. It is not some fantasy piece made up from an old blank diary and is 100% guaranteed to be a Civil War cavalryman's diary from 1864 with very good content.
