12mo pocket variety, written by Private James Aker. Aker, a Corporal from Milwaukee, enlisted on August 5, 1862 for the three year stint. He mustered out at Nashville, on June 10, 1865. Along the way, Aker`s as part of the 24th, saw action in numerous engagements in the West, including Perryville, Stone`s River, Chickamauga, Resaca, and Kennesaw Mountain, and on to Atlanta. After the Atlanta campaign the 24th was with Thomas through Tennessee and Alabama, and fought valiantly at the battle of Franklin, and Nashville, Tennessee. Aker`s diary is for the year 1864, and consists primarily of cryptic notes regarding his daily activities, going on and off picket, receiving new cloths, purchases from sutlers, the weather, and the sundries of every day existence. He was a peripatetic writer; for a period of two weeks during June, he made very few entries. In July and August, as the Army moved inexorably towards Atlanta, Aker began to make note of atillery bombardments -- on both sides -- the building of breastworks, and then on July 20 at Peachtree Creek, made note of his personal involvement: `Marched at five. Got in line....at noon the line advanced drove the rebs. They charged us. a great many killed and wounded. Fired a hundred rounds.` From July 20 until the actual fall of Atlanta, Aker`s diary notes movements from breastwork to breastwork, cannonades, foraging for food, and finally, on Thursday September 8th the 24th marched through Atlanta. After the fall of Atlanta, Aker and his companions returned to Tennessee, arriving in Nashville in on Sunday, November 27th. He was admitted to Brown`s Hospital just outside of Louisville, Kentucky shortly thereafter, but returned to his unit near Franklin, Tennessee on December 6th. On Friday, December 30th he made the entry `Bought a Henry rifle this morning for $50.`
