This is the diary of Lebbeus B. Miller of the 77th Illinois Volunteers 13th Corps, 10th division 2nd Brigade 17th Regiment Company C. He enlisted August 14th 1862 near Springfield Illinois at Camp Butler. It is packed with information about each town passed and many battles. He writes in detail about the battles, injuries and deaths. He fought in the battle for Vicksburg.My father was given this diary back in the 1960's from the grandson for Mr. Miller.The diary is 113 pages and is in good shape for its age and considering Lebbeus carried it through the civil war. The binding is loose and the covers are rough. The pages are in very good shape and the entire diary is readable.Here is a excerpt from July 1863. "Precisely at 10AM the white rags begin to float over the forts. They stack their arms outside of their works and we take possession of the Southern Gibralter after 47 days hard struggle, we get 35,000 prisoners about 1/2 sick, 60,000 small arms and about 60 seige guns and a lot of smaller cannons, a large amount of ammunition and other war materials."The diary recounts numerous battles and the everyday struggle to survive. Lebbeus reports details about what he and his company ate, where they slept and more.
