A nice Civil War Document of Brig. General Dan Sickles naming his Staff Officers. Captain Orson H. Hart age 32 transferred from the 70th to join his command staff as Assistant Adjutant General. Capt. Van Buren Bates age 34 came from the 70th NY to join as Provost Marshall. Harrison Young served as Ordinance Officer. Signed and dated by D.E. Sickles. Soon after the Civil War began, Sickles offered his services to New York and was authorized to raise a regiment. The reaction to his name in the newspapers and on posterboards was electric and Sickles had over two thousand volunteers ready for war within a few weeks. He received a brigadier general's star for his efforts and was appointed to command the "Excelsior Brigade" made up entirely of New York troops, even though he had no formal military training. The brigade was sent to the Army of the Potomac and first experienced battle at Williamsburg in 1862. Despite his lack of military training, General Sickles exhibited a hard-hitting attitude on the battlefield. He also used his experience in politics to benefit both himself and his command with high ranking officers and by the spring of 1863, General Sickles was in command the Third Corps, a force of nearly 19,000 men.
