T are very interesting articles within this auction...
The Bible was a Christmas gift to a mother from her son in 1866. Also noted are the births of two children, 1880 and 1881.
At an auction I purchased this Bible, and found within the pages an old photo of a couple, a newspaper clipping and a quill written speech on 'The American Party'. The newspaper clipping has a poem 'T is No Death' on one side and an excerpt from 'Cost of Race Problems' on the reverse side. The speech 'The American Party', written by Sarah Saunders, sister to George Saunders (An article published in The New York Times, July 18, 1855, references George Saunders as a chief counselor and first friend toSenator Douglas, who was head and front to a young American Party). While no date is written on the speech, reference indicates this party was in existence from 1849 to 1860, the demise being the party would not take a stand on slavery; they did however take a stand on immigration. T are references within the speech to immigration as t are also references to 'the great and good Washington himself' and 'a Bible should be held by every citizen and that is the only true basis of religious liberty. This is a great and good principal. The Bible was held by our forefathers with sacred reverence'
T are 5 full pages on stationary with an embossed eagle and P&S in the upper left corner of each page. T is a heavy vertical crease on each page, with clean separation at the center horizontal fold line for each page (see pic). I have placed the papers in a heavy binding book in efforts to resist further separation. The bible has wear to the edges and spine, but binding is very much intact. Bible measures 6" x 4"
