CIVIL WAR ERABLACKSMITH MADESTRONG BOX / DOCUMENT BOXFresh from an estate sale is a blacksmith made Strongbox or Document Box dating to the Civil War era. The gentleman who the estate sale was for had been a collector of antique cast iron items and Civil War items. As you can see from the pictures, this box was hammered into shape, with no welds, but does have hammered rivets. The name on the lid is J. W. Knowlton and the lettering is hand-painted and is in a three colored shadow form. I am not sure of the identity of J.W. Knowlton. However, t was a Julius W. Knowlton with the Fourteenth Regiment, Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. Julius W. Knowlton, Bridgeport, Commissary Sergeant, enlisted June 24, 1862, mustered in August 23, 1862, wounded July 3, 1863, Gettsburg, Pa; Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant Co. C January 11, 1864. Note: I want to be clear that t is no history with this Civil War strong box that positively links it to Julius W. Knowlton. However, it was made during the period he served. I will take many pictures so that you can determine the condition and era of this Safe Box for yourself. This would make a great blacksmith made strong box to add to your Civil War collection.DESCRIPTION & CONDITION: Approximately 6 1/2" wide x 5 7/8" tall x 14 1/4" long Thickness of metal is approximately 3/32" Blacksmith made with no welds. read more
