With the exception of the corps and decorative identification badge the fire badge was probably the most commonly utilized personal uniform embellishments of the non commissioned soldier of the Civil War. Far less common on todays market than the corps and ID badges the status of the fire badge on the Civil War battlefield has non the less been well established by those devoted historians with metal detectors we refer to affectionately as diggers. Several examples may be seen in Stanly Philips classic reference, Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of the Civil War with additional examples included in more recently published references. This offering is of the BOSTON VETERAN FIRE ASSOCIATION (see: Co. K 19th Mass., Boston Tiger Fire Zouaves & Co. I 30th Mass., Boston Fire Zouaves) and is undoubtedly the highest quality and most ornate example we have seen in a long time. This badge demonstrates all the classic features of Civil War vintage design and construction that knowledgeable collectors look for. Hand cut and heavily engraved from thinly hammered sheet silver, this badge is a size standout measuring 2 3/16 X 1 ¾,(illustrated here with a U.S. quarter for size comparison) and is in excellent all original condition down to its original T-bar fastener. please note: ALL ITEMS ARE CURRENT & AVAILABLE UNLESS MARKED SOLD!!.
