Civil War Era Eagle Snare Drum Rare and Collectible
Shipping and insurance costs to be calculated at end of auction. Please examine photos carefully for the condition of this piece. Offered for sale is a Civil War era eagle snare drum constructed of a varnished wood cylinder fastened with nails. The hand painted eagle carries a banner reading "E Pluribus Unium" and some of the paint has peeled off of the banner. Unfortunately, one skin is missing, as are the adjustable ropes and leather cuffs. The red painted wooden counter-hoop is in place on the end w the skin is missing. The hoop for the intact skin has separated from the drum and has a small crack (see photo). However this is a much sought after eagle snare. The missing skin permits a clear view of the two labels. T is a yellow label that reads FromFIRTH, POND & CO., IMPORTERS, MANUFACTURERS AND DEALERS OF Musical Instruments, Publishers of Music, &c No. 547 Broadway, New York This label has been glued over another blue label. Peeling back part of the Firth, Pond & Co. label reveals enough of the original label to see that the manufacturer of the drum is William Kilbourn of 147 Clinton Avenue , Albany , New York who manufactured musical instruments between 1858 and 1863. Hand written in pencil above these labels is "Bought by B. Dillingham" In Googling B. Dillingham I did discover a William (Bill?) B. Dillingham who served as an acting drum major in Company D, 12th Maine Infantr and as a Musician in Company A, 50th Massachusetts Infantry . It is impossible to know if this was his drum, but it is an interesting coincidence perhaps worth pursuing by the successful bidder. Dillingham, William Bainbridge (1836 - 1864) b. 1836 in Dixfield, Oxford ,ME d. 186 4
