Here we have an Antique, Civil War Era, Faux Tortoise Shell Cased Lancet Bleeder Medical Fleam, A & M SHEFFIELD MAKER. I could not find any history on this obscure Maker but the style fits right in with the American Civil War or English Victorian Era. These medical devices were used from the 17th century until the late 1800's. For hundreds of years it was believed that bleeding out some of the "bad" blood would help a person recover from illness or injury. The steel blade is housed within faux tortoise shell blade guards. The blade is stamped: A & M SHEFFIELD MAKER. The lancet is in overall very good condition with no cracks or breaks to the faux tortoise shell and has only a couple of very tiny edge flea-bites. The blade exhibits only a little oxidation. The steel blade length is 1-1/2". When closed, the lancet is 2-1/16" long. This is a fine piece to add to your Civil War era or medical collection.'Apologies' - none.** Please remember to leave Feedback . I will gladly reciprocate. :-)
