This is a historic pair of Civil War era Officer’s Field Glasses imported by * BARDOU & SON * PARIS, long considered the finest manufacturer of optics during the period and the only documented supplier of Union field glasses and telescopes during the war. The optics are excellent, about 4x power, the leather covering is long gone but easy to restore. Mechanically they are in excellent condition. The focus wheel is made of Gutta-Percha. This hard rubber material is the forerunner of today’s plastic. For a similar example used by the army and navy on both sides during the Civil War see, North South Trader Civil War Collector’s Price Guide, 10 th Edition , page 160 . Not only does it show a similar set of period field glasses but the text reads… “Civil War field glasses generally have a straight bridge between the two eyepieces whereas post-war bridges are generally bent or contoured to the nose.” I have scanned that page and included it here for your convenience. These extra large field glasses measure approx. 6-1/2” closed, about 9" extended with both sun shades out. These shades never manufactured with a leather veneer. Both ways are pictured here. The maker's name on both japanned brass eyepieces is... * BARDOU & SON * PARIS The extra special bonus is that these glasses still retain their field-made "Navy style" whip tied neck strap. The straight bridge on this pair along with the documented Bardou contract makes this set an excellent for your officer’s equipment collection, or for the living history display.
