This attractive Civil War vintage billy measures approximately 9 3/4 inches in length and was turned from lignum vitae. Heavy and hard so as to be commonly referred to as iron wood , lignum vitae is one of the hardest and heaviest woods (three times as hard as oak). All characteristics that would put the material in favor for special use in Civil War era steam machine and nautical applications, this richly colored dense wood served many a police officer who could afford private purchase of such. Nice color with lots of age patina this example shows the usual fine age cracking indicative to lignum vitae. A wonderful display addition to any period Police or Military Provost Martial grouping.
