When you open this box, you'll smell the spices right away. I've kept the appropriate spices in each canister (in plastic bags, however). This dates to mid-19th century America and is the most delightful way to store your spices. The little canisters, labeled nutmegs, pepper (the largest one), ginger, mustard, mace, allspice, cinnamon, and cloves are in excellent shape. The main round box is in good shape except that the sides have slightly pulled away from the bottom in one area. It's not caving in, however, and is still very sturdy and useable. The cinnamon box has a piece of very old bandage-type tape on the side on which someone has written "mustard seeds" in an old hand. The main canister is stenciled "SPICES" on both the lid and the side. The insert boxes are labeled on both the tops and sides with their respective names. The box labeled "cloves" is a redder tone than the rest. The box measures 9 inches across and 3.5 inches high. The largest insert, the pepper box, is 3.5 inches across. If you like vintage kitchenalia, please look at my other items this week. And I'm selling the most interesting shoes that you'll definitely want to look at if you're a size US 8-9 or EU size 38-39.
