TINTYPE OF UNION GENERAL JOHN WHITE GEARY - A POSSIBLE UNKNOWN VARIANT IMAGE FROM LIFE? AN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING ORIGINALLY AS FOUND SIXTEENTH PLATE (1/16th PLATE) TINTYPE OF INFAMOUS CIVIL WAR UNION GENERAL JOHN WHITE GEARY - POSSIBLY UNPUBLISHED! This dainty little tintype was found in this tiny little half case, matte and preserver. The preserver is separated / broken at two corners (from bending of the stiff preserver, but still fits nicely around the image as you can plainly see). This is not a big issue. But this tiny image is possibly a very big image find! What we have here, at least from what can be found on Google Images is that apparently this tintype image was taken at the same sitting as that of the paper photograph that we show in comparison below. It is the same angle mind you, but the various nuances of the change in jacket shape are evident and the position of the epaulets and buttons are strikingly different between the two images. Also, the eyes of UNION GENERAL JOHN WHITE GEARY are much more penetrating than those found in the accompanying comparison photo we found on Google Images. Also, the collar of the jackets are both different. And so is the positioning of the beard. The only thing similar is the angle the images were taken from. ALSO, IN THE TINTYPE WE OFFER HERE ONE CAN SEE THE EDGE OF A SHELF OR SOMETHING IN THE CENTER RIGHT OF THE IMAGE (with a realistic shadow below it), when the matte is removed. Certainly not a retouched image of any sort - but ALL ORIGINAL. AS SHOWN ABOVE & BELOW. Tintype in good condition and appears to be one of a kind and certainly a rare find for the serious CIVIL WAR COLLECTOR or MUSEUM. Perhaps this was taken by a different photographer on a different day, but either way - we can not find a copy of THIS IMAGE on the internet. ONE OF A KIND? YOU DECIDE!!! For the serious Civil War collector JOHN WHITE GEARY: “GIANT OF HIS TIMES” Few men have ever had such an impact on the history of their times, nor contributed more to the development of their nation and state, and, thrust into more critical and pivotal roles at the very flash point of action, nor more often influenced the course of historic events than John White Geary. Geary was born in Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County in Pennsylvania on December 30, 1819. He was descended from the sturdy Scotch- Irish pioneers, who had scratched out farms from the vast wilderness. His father, Richard Geary was well educated and refined for his day. He had failed at the iron business and opened a school, teaching for the remainder of his life. Geary's mother, Margaret White hailed from Washington County in Western Maryland. Geary grew to be a giant in stature, reaching 6’6’’ tall, and weighed over 250 lbs. in his adulthood. He had a sturdy and athletic physique, a long dark beard in keeping with the style of the day, dark piercing eyes, and a dark complexion, all which gave Geary a most commanding presence. Geary's father educated his two surviving sons at home and sought to instill in them his love of learning, but also his intense ambitious quest for success. Geary's older brother, Edward became a noted and influential Presbyterian minister, and an early figure in the history of the Oregon Territory, which he pioneered. John White Geary, after a solid preparation at his father's school entered Jefferson (now Washington & Jefferson) College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. 4 After his father's death Geary withdrew from college to provide for his family by opening his own school at the age of 15. With hard work, doing, among other things, a teaching stint in a school he opened, and following a thrifty lifestyle, Geary was able to return to Jefferson College and graduated with a degree. After graduation, Geary passed through a period in which he experimented with a variety of professions for his life's work.
