Up for sale are some Civil War era Coin Silver Dinner Knives that once belonged to General Alexander Brydie Dyer. There are 11 knives in this auction, each weighing 1.7 ounces or 50 grams of Coin Silver -- a total of 550 grams in all. The maker of these knives is Bailey & Co (later became Bailey, Banks & Biddle). The Hallmark would indicate that these were made sometime between 1848 to 1865. These knives came from a direct decendent of Civil War General A. B. Dyer and each has the monogram "D" on the handle. Coin Silver was popular in the Colonial days through the mid to late 1800's and contained between 80% and 90% silver. Major General Alexander Brydie Dyer was born in Richmond, VA January 10, 1815. He was appointed to West Point from the State of Missouri in 1833, graduating 6th in the class of 1837. He served in the Florida Indian Wars as a Lieutenant of artillery and in 1838 transfered to the Ordnance Department. As a rank of Captain, he performed routine ordnance service until the outbreak of the Civil War when, although a native Virginian, he chose loyalty to the Union. He was put in charge of the Springfield Armory in August, 1861, and soon quadrupled its production to manufacture a 1000 rifles a day. He once declined the post of Chief of Ordance proffered by President Abraham Lincoln in January, 1862, out of regard for the incumbent , General James W. Ripley, but after Ripley retirement, he was promoted to the office, with the rank of Brigadier General on September 12, 1864. In 1865 he was brevetted to the rank of Major General which he maintained until his death in Washington, DC at 59 years of age on May 20, 1874. He in interred at Arlington National Cemetary.
