CIVIL WAR GUTTA PERCHA CASE Listing a wonderful Gutta Percha tintype case from the Civil War Era. There is no tintype inside but what's inside is even better. It contains a single braid of light reddish brown hair tied at the larger end with a piece of red ribbon and at the smaller end with a piece of blue ribbon. There is burgundy velvet on the inside left and a piece of red cloth on the inside right where the hair was placed. I have taken a photo of the paper label under the hair. Now for the best part. The outside of the case is the finest I have ever seen. There is a federal shield on the top center and two more federal shields at each lower corner. There are crossed cannons in the center above a pyramid of cannon balls. There are two pennants above the cannons and a cap on a stick above a leaf cluster. There is a leaf design on all four sides and there is an American flag on the right and left sides. The entire inside medallion is surrounded by a star trimmed border. Back has the exact same design. There are only minor issues with this piece. The brad on the top hinge has worn through the case so the cover is loose. On the picture of the case opened which shows front and back you could see a tiny hole where the brad worked it's way through the case. The brad is still in the hinge and could probably be easily repaired but I chose to leave well enough alone. I think this occurred because the lock of hair may have been too large for the case and forcing the case to close over many years popped the hinge. There is no gilt frame on the inside right. It had long ago been removed I suppose to hold the lock of hair. It's touching to think that a soldier would carry a lock of his loved one's hair with him. The case itself is in excellent condition and measures approximately 3 1/4 x 3 3/4. All items are sold as is so email me for more info or pics if necessary. I accept paypal and all items must be paid for no later than 5 days from close of auction. I ship USPS I put the BUY IT NOW price high because I have no idea what to price this piece. Don't be shy about making any offer. All offers will be considered. Thank you.
