Featured in this auction is a HARPER'S WEEKLY Civil War Era Newspaper. It is dated October 1, 1864. Nearing the end of the War Between the States. HARPER'S WEEKLY was a very popular paper, and was read by most of the troops and the folks back home. HARPER'S WEEKLY was delivered to the solders in the field by HARPER'S WEEKLY wagons, and Sutlers. This paper features battles that took place within the previous 30 days, which was customary during that period. What is unique about this particular newspaper is it features an article describing President Abraham Lincoln's Rally Round the Flag Speech. It also dedicates a full page sketch of President Lincoln and , US Troops and the American Flag. All of the pictures were originally hand drawn, and then hand carved into lithographs. They are all works of art. This is a very Rare Civil War Newspaper, of a momentous event in our Nations Naval History. T are several other war related articles of other Battles, as in the Destruction of Railways by General Hood just outside of Atlanta on September 1, 1864. It also describes accounts of General Sherman's victory at Joesborough, and the march of Confederate soldiers to Atlanta. T is also a photograph of a new US Torpedo Boat, the USS New Era, Reminiscent of the Confederate Torpedo Boat, The Hennley ( The First Submarine ). T are many more along with the paid advertisements, which are reminiscent of the day and amusing. Lots of Political satire and the Cartoons to go along with it. I included a photo of one, to get an idea. Some of the pages are loose and torn at the fold, some frayed edges, and some minor losses at the edges. However it is a complete HARPER'S WEEKLY Civil War Era Newspaper , and if opened carefully and placed in protective treated plastic covers, it will be around forever to be enjoyed and read by all.
