This is a true "McDowell" style forage cap. I've seen a couple of flat brimmed visor 1858 forage caps on eBay being called a "McDowell" style, but this one is made like the original McDowell brimmed forage cap. This new reproduction has the glossy, tarred 1/2 moon crescent shaped visor and it stands up tall (5 1/2 inches) like the one General Irwin McDowell is wearing in the picture. It is made out of a fine Union blue wool fabric with reed piping around the crown and the visor. It has a tarred chin strap with buckle and federal eagle buttons. Inside is a black polished cotton lining with a black leather sweatband hand sewn onto the cap just like the originals. T is no maker label inside since these were private purchase caps made by tailors. This one was was tailored by yours truly...someone who has been making kepis and forage caps for over 20 years. SIZE 7 3/8. This style cap was made popular at the beginning of the war by General McDowell and his staff. It's popularity spread and was adopted by officers and enlisted men alike. Even the Confederates copied it since you see this style in Echoes of Glory belonging to Rebel officers & men. Thanks for looking!
