This is a Civil War letter from Private David Woodcock of Company A of the 5th Wisconsin Infantry. It is a letter home written "Dear Father", it is dated December 22, 1861 from Camp Griffin in Virginia. In the letter he writes how he was sick and has recovered and gained 10 pounds since enlisting. He enlisted for 3 years in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin very early in the war on May 14, 1861. The 5th Winconsin saw action at Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. This letter was written just 5 months before Private Woodcock was "killed by a musket ball" at the battle of Williamsburg on May 5, 1862. The letter consists of two pages and is very easy to read but is not complete as it does not have the final page. A great piece of history nevertheless. A great piece for the Wisconsin Civil War collector of a soldier who died early in the war. Please ask questions before bidding. Thanks.
