Awesome 4 page letter written by W.C. Capron, (Listed in Uxbridge, Massachusetts 1850 census as a Deputy Sheriff) to his children. Letter is dated April 15, 1865, the day after President Lincoln was shot and killed. Mr. Capron is catching the cars(train) to Boston that morning. Also states Mr. Seward was stabbed in his bed, not expected to live, and his son was beaten by the assassin and had died. Talks of the joy of the end of War, the fall of Richmond, the surrender of Lee's Army of Virginia and then this terrible tragedy. Stores and homes in Boston were being decorated in black drapes, flags at half staff, bells tolled, guns fired, crowds in the streets, many loved President Lincoln. He stopped the letter and then finished it on the 17th of April. with news that, Sewards son was alive and Sec. Seward was also improving. States that Sec. Stanton and Vice-President were intended to be assassinated also but the villians did not accomplish this. Mr. Capron then goes on to talk about family things and names several of his children: Sam, Laura, Henry(John Henry). Also mentions Aunt Catherine. From research of Genealogy records, believe this is William Cargill Capron b. Aug 10, 1800 d:1875. Deputy Sheriff Worchester Co. in 1850 census. His children Samuel Mills Capron, John Henry Capron, and Laura Ann mentioned in letter and Aunt Catherine being wife of his brother John Willard Capron, Catherine Brown Messinger. Letter is actually one sheet of very thin blue paper folded once giving 4 pages of text. Great condition. Tha paper is so thin that the ink from the other pages is lightly visible when reading another page. Measures 8" x 5 1/8" Great handwriting easy to read.No envelope with letter. No Reserve
