CIVIL WAR LETTER M. S. AUSTIN - 5TH NJ VOLS Lecompton, October, 31 1861 You are bidding on an authentic letter from the Civil War, dated October 31, 1861 . This is one letter from a collection of over 200 that we acquired from the descendents of the authors' of these letters. These represent a complete account of the Civil War thru the eyes of Captain Matthew Steve Austin, who is buried in Mercer County Cemetary, NJ. They are letters from Steve & his brother that were in the 5th New Jersey Volunteers, one of whom died in the war. Also from their friend, Colonel Frank W. Pickett, of the colored infantry in Missouri and are written to their father, mother, cousin and girlfriends. The 5th NJ volunteers is one of the least known units in the Civil War. Many of these letters are between officers and include information not in history books. We have had Civil War historians view the letters and they all agree that these letters are GENUINE! In fact, John Hayward has reviewed them as part of research for his upcoming novel on the 5th New Jersey Volunteers. The book should be published by the fall of 2007 with the proposed title of "FOLLOW ME JERSEY MEN". This collection covers the entire Civil War (1861 - 1865) and several events leading up to the war in 1860. The significance of these letters include: New information (previously unknown): Information supportive of current knowledge: In-depth personal feelings and rare content. THESE LETTERS ARE NOT JUST THOSE OF ENLISTED MEN, BUT RATHER, OFFICERS IN THE CIVIL WAR. WE WILL BE OFFERING THE MOST IMPORTAND LETTERS AT THE END OF OUR AUCTIONS, SUCH AS LETTERS REGARDING THE BLACK UNITS, LINCOLN'S ASSASSINATION AND THE SUICIDE OF GENERAL PATTERSON. We have attempted, to the best of our ability, to type the letter verbatim. However, some of the handwriting is hard to read so please keep that in mind when reading the typed version. The condition of this letter is EXCELLENT!! This letter is 4 pages long (front and back of one piece of paper) and written in ink. The stationery measures approximately 10" x 15-1/2". In the upper left corner t is embossed design with a little person inside. T is wear at the creases from folding, but it does not affect the ability to read the letter. It has been preserved in museum quality plastic covers. This amazing historical piece would make a great addition to any collection! We do not accept payPal!! ********************************************************************** THE TEXT OF THE LETTER IS AS FOLLOWS: ********************************************************************** Camp of the Fifth Reg NJ Vols "Meridian Hill" October 31, 1861 My Dear Father~ Your letter of the 29 th was received this evening and amused me somewhat on reading the quotation which you made from my letter in regard to chevrons w the word "angle" had been turned into "bugle". You read the sentence right. The Col. Orders me to wear The ordinary chevron of a sergeant, with the letters C.S. in the angle, that is, in the angle formed by the chevron. The Gov't. undertakes to supply chevrons for all non-commissioned officers but are doubtless unable to supply the demand, as this regiment has not been able to draw any one special requisitions. So far all the non-commissioned officers of the regiment have supplied their own and have had them put on as best they could, so you may judge t is not much uniformity in shape or color. The tape you have sent me does not correspond in color with any worn in the reg. but as t is no uniformity, I shall venture to have them put on as soon as I can find some one to so it properly. Those furnished by the Gov't. sewed upon the cloth to correspond with the color ...
