German silver, with fine, one line engraved inscription `11th Regt Penna Vol Inftry,` and applied copper plaque with raised `Norton`s Patent Improved Field Bugle for Infy. Cavy. & Artillery. 5th. and Minor St. Phila.` C. H. Norton and Company are known to have been at this Philadelphia address from the mid-1850s until 1860. At least two other bugles of this type are known to have been used by other Pennsylvania units. The 11th Pennsylvania was an exceptionally hard-fighting unit. Troops from this unit were present at nearly every major engagement of the Army of the Potomac, and were present at war`s end at Appomattox. In 1862 they participated in Thorofare Gap (16 KIA); Antietam; Fredericksburg (14 KIA, 66 wounded). Their hard-fighting continued in 1863, where they were participants in all three days of the activities at Gettysburg where they suffered 6 KIA, 66 wounded and 60 missing. Thereafter, they were actively engaged throughout the Eastern Theatre. Untouched, with great patina, the original mouthpiece. With guarantee of authenticity.
