This auction is for a lot of 2 photos--one of Civil War veteran Hugh Anderson and the other is for his wife, Hannah Louisa (Peirce) Anderson. Hugh was born in Buffalo, New York on February 4, 1839 and was a son of William and Sarah Anderson. On January 18, 1865 he married Hannah Louisa Peirce, daughter of Oliver Beale Peirce and Hannah N. Tibbets. Hannah Louisa was born in Rome, New York on November 2, 1844. Hugh Anderson served in the Union Army in the Civil War and at the end of this description I'll post his Civil War service record taken from The couple lived in Oswego, New York in the 1860's and early 1870's and had two children, William Peirce Anderson (who later became a famous architect in Chicago), and Mary Louisa Anderson. In the 1870's the couple, who had converted to Mormonism, followed other members of the Peirce family to Salt Lake City, Utah and there they lived on Main St. with just one house separating them from Brigham Young, Jr. Hugh worked as a bookkeeper and insurance agent. He and his wife moved to Chicago shortly after the turn of the last century to be near their son. They were still alive at the time of the 1910 census but I did not find them in 1920. Their son, Peirce, is buried in Graceland Cemetery in Chicago and Hugh and Louisa may be there also. There is no photographer stamp on the photo of Hugh Anderson. read more
