This is a small tin, embossed top, traveling stencil ink tube. This Civil War period artifact was an indispensable part of asoldier's personal items. With the popularity of stencils for marking clothes,books and equipment this was a needed item that was most likely purchased through sutlers. The tube has an applied paper label that reads... Payson's Indelible Ink . It has an 1853 patent date and has instructions on how to use the ink. The tin top is also embossed... Payson's Indelible Ink . The empty tube stands a mere 2-1/4" and 1" across the base. This is the perfect addition to your Civil War collection and could even be used in a Living History scenario. Check out my other items !
