I THINK!!! This sword is from the civil war??I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE! Maybe some one out there will know better!!!
Anyway......It is in dirty,,,tarnished condition!! The wire on the handle is there ...but maybe not all of it...[I don't know anything about what should be there] The handle appears to be made of sharkskin?? The blade has etchings in it ....they are very hard to make out because of the light rusty colored patina which covers the whole blade. The sword measures apprx 40 3/4 [inches]....blade length and 35 [inches]. There is a handmade roman numeral [XX lll ] at the base of the blade on the hand guard![I tried to photograph it ....see pics] I don't know what it means??? I'm offering a 3 day inspection! Please ask any questions...more request more pics! I have been informed by an VERY nice ebayer that this sword may be a 1872 Cavalry sword ?? I also should add the fact that the edge of the blade has multiple "V" shaped notches cut into it[8 distinctly visible....others visible] They look hits from other blades!???They look like they have been there for a while.... They have the same patina as the blade itself. Possibly battle "scars"??? CORRECTION.... The hand scribed "Roman numerals" at the base of the blade on the brass guard are "XX llll" NOT XXlll if that makes a difference?? The "Xs overlap each other diagonally ?? Could be a makers mark??????? I don't know. At the base of the blade...On the blade there is an etching.. SOL[I can't make out the rest].... It is a partial makers mark ....An ebayer has suggested that the blade may be German made By the Solingen Company and may have been a fancier variant of an officers sword?!?!???? I can't confirm this as I have no clue!! I've had some questions as to "how big are the "V" notches"?? They are not big....they are more like heavy burrs.the deepest one measuring approx. 1/64 of inch?? The rest smaller.
