Uniform that belonged to Asa Collier, a jeweler and a veteran of the civil war, who came to Plainfield, NJ, after the war ended. A devout family man who was very active with the Masons, as was his son, Paul Revere Collier, who became one of Plainfield's most famous photographers (Google - Plainfield library photo collection). The uniform consists of the following: Jacket with brass buttons, which is in pretty good condition, considering it has been in a trunk for eighty years. Has single metal bar, like a badge signifying rank, on the left breast. Hat is coming apart at top seam as shown in pictures. Brim is leather. Brass buttons . Marked inside : "Henderson Ames". Sash is beautiful sewn cloth with large metal emblems, and metal clasp sewn in. Sword belt is part cloth, part silver plated brass, with snaps to hold the sword. Buckle is silver plated bronze with cloisonne crosses. Marked "Trinity no. 17", which I researched and is located in nearby Westfield, NJ., which is still active. The round button , almost 2" in diameter, bears the Knights Templar emblem on one side, and the seal of the State of New Jersey on the reverse. Brass rimmed. The sword is 38" overall, and with a 30" blade. The sheath is heavily engraved, and bears the name "Asa Collier" The blade is also heavily decorated, and bears the son's name "Paul R. Collier", indicating that he inherited the outfit and was a member after the Father died. Paul's middle name, Revere, was suggested to his mother by Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of "Little Woman", who lived next to the Colliers in Concord, Mass, before the moved to NJ. Sword made by Henderson Ames, Kalamazoo, MI. Has some nicks along the edges. Please write if you know more about this wonderful set of artifacts. The free listing tool.
