This fine oil painting elevates a simple, unpretentious subject--such as humble women picking clams on a cloudy day by the sea shore--giving it an otherwordly, luminous atmosphere. Pierre Emile BerthÃf©lÃf©my (born in Rouen, 1818 - died in BerniÃf¨res-Sur-Mer, 1890) was one of France's foremost 19th century marine artists. He is listed in Benezit where an extensive account of his work, prizes and exhibits appears. An accomplished etcher and painter, he studied art under Cogniet at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1846 and his fine marine studies were frequently shown there until his death in 1890. BerthÃf©lÃf©my's etchings and paintings are included in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. and public galleries in Paris, London, Rouen, Amiens and Bayeux.
A French BerthÃf©lÃf©my expert has recently confirmed the authenticity of this painting. We quote him: "Obviously, your painting is by Pierre-Emile Berthelemy (1819-1894). His style and touch are evident in the very nice canvas that you own. As you may have learned, we have conducted a research study on this painter for a long time. Our database includes approximately 600 pieces of art, 450 by Pierre-Emile and the rest by his son Emile-Valentin. We intend to organize an exhibition in Caen (in Normandy) next year (2005), at the Caen Museum of Art." Additional photos available upon request.
